Running the Edinburgh Half Marathon for Link

What’s it like to fundraise for Link? Our Comms and Admin officer takes us through her day running the Edinburgh Half Marathon to raise funds for our life-changing education projects:

It’s a 5.30am wake-up call for me, getting in some breakfast and hydrating in plenty time before the race starts. Then off to the start line, representing Link with the latest fitness fashion!

8am on the start line, starting to feel quite nervous as I’ve only ever raced a 5k before. Everyone else in my start pen is lovely, though, and I’m feeling better knowing we’re all in it together.

Mile 2 and thrilled to see some friendly faces: shout out to my family for coming out to cheer me on, and especially to my Mum for coming down from Aberdeen as race support squad extraordinaire (and waking up at 5.30am also to see me off at the start line).

At the halfway mark I’m starting to feel the burn, but determined to remember my training and keep going. So many lovely people cheering us on from the side, and there are even a few kids offering up jelly babies!

It’s hard going at mile 11 where the course starts the dog-leg beyond Musselburgh and you can see the runners heading the other way past you to the finish line. Thinking of all of the generous people who have sponsored me and of the amazing work Link is doing keeps me going, and I’m determined to push through and finish this!

And I did! What a feeling of achievement to have finished this epic challenge. I’m tired and stiff but grinning from ear to ear.

I finish the day with a hard-earned celebratory meal (and pint) with friends and family. I can honestly say this experience will live with me forever, I’ve never felt more proud and simultaneously exhausted. If anyone else is considering taking on a tough challenge for a good cause I can’t recommend it enough, all the training was absolutely worth it.
