Greetings from the Link Team,
Firstly, we would like to thank our 2016 Hitchers for taking part in this year’s Hitch. We are proud to say, once again, that Hitch went off without any incidents with all our Hitchers traveling a combined distance of nearly 40,000 miles to raise money for Link’s work across sub-Saharan Africa.
This time of year is always a time of reflection on how Link can ensure our income is maximised from our fundraising events to make sure that the beneficiaries of our work are receiving as much support as possible. With this in mind, and with serious consideration, we have decided to rest Hitch for 2016/17.
We have taken this decision with great reluctance. Hitch has been an event that has provided so many of us with great joy over the past 24 years. Nearly 9,000 of you have helped us raise nearly £4.5 million to support our work. However, higher costs and prominent security concerns across Europe has increased the risk of operating Hitch. In this time of uncertainty we need to ensure that we are able to continue to provide the best possible support our projects in Africa.
We would like to place on record a heartfelt thank you to every single Hitcher, Nominated Contact, Sponsor, Partner and Driver for allowing Hitch to be the UK’s biggest organised Hitch-Hike for over two decades. We would also like to thank the hundreds of our volunteer Hitch Reps who have made Hitch possible since 1992.
Whilst we will not be running a Hitch in 2016/17, there are still plenty of other exciting events that you can get involved in to support Link’s fantastic work in sub-Saharan Africa.
